This is the stripped-down, original method by Ryder Carroll, not the artistic "scrapbook" style. The goal is mindfulness and organization.
You will need:
Any notebook
A pen
The Core Modules (The Steps):
Index: Open your notebook. The first few blank pages are your Index. This is a table of contents for your journal. As you number pages and add content, you log the topic and page number here.
Future Log: Turn to the next blank spread (two facing pages). Divide them into three sections each, giving you six sections total, one for each month (or up to 12). This is where you write down events and tasks far in the future.
Monthly Log: On the next spread, left page is the Calendar Page: Write the month’s name, list every date down the left margin (1-30), and add the first letter of the day (M, T, W...). Log short entries next to dates. Right page is the Task Page: List all tasks you want to accomplish that month.
Daily Log (The Heart of It): On the next blank page, write today’s date. As the day goes on, log entries using rapid logging, a system of bullet symbols:
• (Dot): A task. ("Reply to client email")
○ (Circle): An event. ("Lunch with Sarah at 1pm")
– (Dash): A note or observation. ("Interesting idea for project from podcast")
Migration & Signifiers: At the end of the month, look at your unfinished tasks. If a task is still relevant, you "migrate" it by rewriting it in your next Monthly Log. Use a Signifier (a small symbol like
*for priority or!for inspiration) to the left of bullets to give them extra context at a glance.
